Sergio Aguero has shared his sentiments regarding his departure from Manchester City in 2021 and his subsequent move to Barcelona. Expressing his desire to stay at City for another season despite the club’s decision not to renew his contract.
After enjoying a successful decade at City, Aguero revealed that the club informed him in January 2021 that they would not be extending his contract. A decision that he hoped to negotiate given his willingness to contribute even from the bench for another year.
“City told me in January 2021 that they weren’t renewing my contract,” Sergio Aguero disclosed. “Although I hadn’t been playing much under Pep, I wanted to stay and help the team. I felt that another year would benefit me physically for the World Cup.”

Despite Aguero’s desire to remain in Manchester, Barcelona offered him an opportunity, albeit at a lower salary than City’s offer. Aguero swiftly accepted the offer from Barcelona, envisioning the prospect of playing alongside his friend Lionel Messi.
However, Barcelona’s financial constraints ultimately prevented Messi from renewing his contract, and he subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Aguero unable to fulfill his dream of playing alongside Messi at Barcelona.
“Leo assured me that everything would be sorted out with his contract at Barcelona,” Aguero recounted. “But when he left, I was left shocked. The club then offered me the No.10 shirt, but I declined out of respect for Messi. I believed the No.10 belonged to him, and if he wasn’t there, it shouldn’t be used by anyone else.”
Aguero’s departure from Manchester City and the missed opportunity to reunite with Messi at Barcelona were significant turning points in his career. Highlighting the unpredictability and challenges that professional footballers face in their careers.
