Manchester United have officially completed the high-profile signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich in a stunning double transfer just before the start of the new Premier League season.
De Ligt, 25, has signed a five-year contract and could make his debut as soon as Friday when United face Fulham in their season opener at Old Trafford. The transfer fee for the Dutch defender could reach £42.9 million, including potential add-ons. De Ligt’s move reunites him with Erik ten Hag, his former manager at Ajax, under whom he developed into one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.
The Netherlands international, who captained Ajax to a memorable Champions League semi-final run in 2019, is expected to strengthen a United defense that has been plagued by injuries. His arrival comes at a crucial time, particularly with the recent injury to £52 million summer signing Leny Yoro, who is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
De Ligt confirmed his departure from Bayern Munich in an emotional letter to the club’s fans, expressing his gratitude for the support he received during his two-year stay. “I have spent two amazing years playing for this beautiful club,” De Ligt wrote. “We have achieved unforgettable moments together… These memories will stay with me forever.”
Upon joining Manchester United, De Ligt spoke about his excitement for a new challenge. “As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I felt an excitement about the opportunity for a new challenge at such a historic club,” he said. “Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me, and I cannot wait to work with him again.”
Joining De Ligt on the journey from Bayern to Manchester is right-back Noussair Mazraoui. He signed a deal with United just hours after West Ham finalized Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s departure. Manchester United expects the Moroccan international, who also flourished under Ten Hag at Ajax, to bring versatility to their backline, with the ability to play on both the right and left sides of the defense.
Mazraoui expressed his excitement about joining Manchester United, saying, “It’s an incredible feeling to be a Manchester United player, and I cannot wait to walk out at Old Trafford wearing the red shirt. Everyone I’ve spoken to has the same ambition for us to win trophies together, and I can feel the determination to achieve that.”
United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, highlighted Mazraoui’s versatility as a key asset, especially with Luke Shaw sidelined until after the first international break. “Noussair is a dynamic, attacking full-back who can play on both the right and left side of defense,” Ashworth said. “His experience and versatility will make him an excellent addition to our squad.”
