Liverpool Opt Against Signing ‘Next Joel Matip’ as Oumar Solet Finalizes Move to Udinese

Liverpool has decided not to pursue a transfer for Oumar Solet as a replacement for the departed Joel Matip. The 24-year-old defender is now set to join Udinese after terminating his contract with Red Bull Salzburg over the summer.

Liverpool had been considering a move for Solet after Matip exited at the end of last season, leaving a vacancy in the Reds’ defense for new manager Arne Slot to fill. Matip had made his own move to Anfield as a free agent in 2016, transitioning from Schalke. Despite battling injuries that marred his final-seasons at club, Matip was instrumental during a successful era under manager Jürgen Klopp. Helping Liverpool secure the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.

Liverpool seemed poised to replicate their success with Matip by bringing in Solet, who displayed considerable promise during his time at Salzburg. The French defender won two consecutive Austrian Bundesliga and Austrian Cup doubles during his four-year tenure at the club.

However, the Reds have opted to pass on the opportunity to sign Solet, who is now on the verge of completing his transfer to Serie A side Udinese. Reports indicate that Udinese is finalizing the last steps of the deal. With Solet recently spotted in the stands during their Coppa Italia victory over Salernitana.

Liverpool’s decision to forego Solet comes after a tumultuous week for their center-backs. Jarrell Quansah’s own goal allowed West Ham to take the lead in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash, although Liverpool ultimately triumphed 5-1. On Saturday, Ibrahima Konate scored the opening goal against Wolves but later made a costly error that allowed the struggling team to equalize. Manager Arne Slot expressed his frustration with Konate’s mistake, stating, “The goal we conceded was definitely avoidable and unnecessary. It came at a bad time because we had total control over the game.”

Slot emphasized the importance of maintaining focus, acknowledging that while Liverpool sits at the top of the table. Early standings do not provide a clear picture of the season’s outcome. “If you look at Wolves, they are down in the table but played much better than that today,” he remarked. “After 19 games, it’ll tell me something but not after six.”
