Kobbie Mainoo is preparing to sign a lucrative new contract with Manchester United but has decided to postpone talks until after the Euros.
The midfielder has had a breakout season with the Red Devils, making his first start in October and subsequently establishing himself as a key player. His impressive performances culminated in scoring in the FA Cup final, helping United secure the trophy at Wembley.
As a result of his on-field success, Manchester United are eager to secure Mainoo’s long-term future. The proposed new deal would see his weekly wages quadruple to approximately £80,000. While Mainoo has agreed to the deal in principle, he prefers to delay negotiations until July, according to the Daily Star.
Mainoo is expected to be part of England’s squad for the upcoming major tournament, having already made his debut. He plans to resume contract discussions once his international commitments are completed.
England has two warm-up matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland in the coming week, before heading to Germany on June 10. After the tournament, Mainoo will shift his focus back to club matters and likely finalize his new contract.
Securing Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford is a priority for Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Despite the player signing a contract in February that runs until 2026. His rapid progress and importance to the team have prompted United to offer another improved deal.
Manchester United has a tradition of nurturing young, homegrown talent, and Mainoo is one of the most promising players to emerge from the club in recent years. Manager Erik ten Hag has been instrumental in Mainoo’s development, advocating for a patient approach. “I think we have to keep it calm,” Ten Hag said. “You are very good here in England to push players and managers very high. And then you hammer them after one or two bad performances. I think we need to keep it very calm. He was [magnificent]. It was really so enjoyable to watch Kobbie at his age.”
Mainoo is one of several young talents in the United squad who have shone during a challenging season. Alejandro Garnacho is another standout prospect who has performed admirably despite the team’s overall struggles.
With his potential new contract, Mainoo aims to continue his development at Manchester United, contributing to the club’s future success.
