Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta believes Mohamed Salah would have been a “special” addition to the club. Reflecting on missed opportunities amid ongoing speculation about the Liverpool star’s future. Salah, currently facing an uncertain tenure with just one year left on his contract at Anfield, has been a target for numerous clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as several Saudi Arabian teams.
Despite the mounting interest, Salah has remained loyal to Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp. Back in 2020, Salah hinted at a potential move to the Camp Nou, acknowledging the allure of top clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid. “I think Madrid and Barcelona are two top clubs. Who knows what will happen in the future, but right now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool again,” Salah stated at the time.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta further fueled the speculation, suggesting that Salah had shown interest in joining the Catalan giants. In an interview with Spanish radio station RAC1, Laporta said, “Top players want to join Barca, that’s clear. I can’t say if we’re in talks for [Robert] Lewandowski and [Mohamed] Salah or not, or in the club. They’ll tell me that I’m creating problems in the negotiations.”
Barcelona even went as far as to make a promise to Salah in the summer of 2022. Assuring him that he could join them on free transfer the following season when his contract was set to expire. However, this promise fell through as Salah opted to sign a new deal with Liverpool, becoming the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Reflecting on this missed opportunity, Iniesta expressed his regret over Barcelona’s failure to secure Salah. Speaking on the Vamos La Liga podcast, Iniesta said, “Signing Mohamed Salah would have been a special deal for Barcelona.”
Salah has continued to be a vital player for Liverpool, scoring 30 goals in the 2022/23 season and following up with another 25 goals in the subsequent campaign. Despite the ongoing speculation about his future. Salah remains a key figure at Anfield, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the club.
