Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle has called for a stronger focus on grassroots football development to help nurture young talent and secure a brighter future for Indian football. Coyle emphasized the importance of identifying and developing potential stars from an early age to ensure the growth and success of the national team.
“While the Indian Super League is contributing significantly to senior football, we must focus on discovering talented players at the youth level, providing them with the right opportunities, and guiding them to the national team,” Coyle said.
One of the key initiatives currently providing a platform for young players is the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL), which has been instrumental in supplying talent to the Indian footballing ecosystem. Over 45 players from the RFDL have gone on to feature in the top-tier leagues, with notable alumni including Sivasakthi Narayanan, Naorem Roshan Singh, Vibin Mohanan, and Mohammed Aimen, among others.
Coyle highlighted India’s vast population as a unique advantage in unearthing untapped footballing talent, particularly at the youth level. “Given the size of India’s population, the potential for football is enormous, especially at the grassroots level. Initiatives like the Reliance Foundation Development League are crucial to providing a much-needed platform for young players to showcase their skills,” he stated.
The RFDL, which began its fourth season on Monday in Goa, continues to expand its reach, with 54 teams from across the country participating. The league’s aim is to develop players and offer them the necessary exposure to transition from grassroots football to the professional ranks.
Coyle’s comments come as part of a growing push to prioritize youth development in Indian football, with the belief that fostering talent at the grassroots level will be key to long-term success.
