Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle has emphasized the critical role of early player scouting and the significance of tournaments like the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) in nurturing young football talent in India. The 2024-25 season of the RFDL kicked off in Goa on Monday, featuring 54 teams, including Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League clubs.
Coyle, who has been a prominent figure in Indian football since the 2019-20 season, praised the RFDL for providing a vital platform for emerging players. “With the population of India, I think we have huge potential in football, especially at the youth level. Initiatives like the RFDL are the need of the hour to give talented players the opportunities they deserve,” said the 58-year-old coach.
The RFDL has already proven its worth, producing several ISL stars, including N Sivasakthi and Naorem Roshan Singh from Bengaluru FC and Vibin Mohanan and Mohammed Aimen from Kerala Blasters FC, who all participated in the league before making their mark at the senior level.
Coyle believes that identifying talent at a younger age is key to long-term success. “It’s not just about spotting players when they’re 16 or 17. We need to invest at the grassroots level and identify talent as early as eight or nine years old,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of developing homegrown players through club academies. “I want to create a pathway for young players coming through the Chennaiyin FC development team. Nothing will please me more than seeing players from Tamil Nadu representing Chennaiyin FC and eventually the national team. It would not only be amazing for the club and fans but also help strengthen the connection between the team and its supporters.”
Coyle lauded the ISL’s efforts in advancing senior football but stressed the need for a comprehensive ecosystem that fosters youth development. His vision aligns with a growing sentiment within Indian football for greater investment in grassroots initiatives to ensure a steady pipeline of talent for the country’s future in the sport.
As the RFDL continues to grow, Coyle’s insights underline the importance of nurturing young talent to elevate Indian football to new heights.
