The Indian men’s football team will play against Malaysia in an international friendly match scheduled for November 18, 2024, at Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad. The announcement was made by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Wednesday, adjusting the original date from November 19.
This match comes after a challenging start for head coach Manolo Marquez, who has yet to secure a victory in his first three matches at the helm. The friendly against Malaysia represents a crucial opportunity for Marquez to earn his first win with the national team.
The Gachibowli Stadium recently hosted the Intercontinental Cup, where India faced mixed results. The team played to a goalless draw against Mauritius on September 3 before succumbing to a 3-0 defeat to Syria, the eventual champions, on September 9. Following that, India traveled to Vietnam for another friendly on October 12, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The upcoming match falls within the FIFA international match window from November 11-19, during which clubs must release players for national duty.
As the match approaches, Marquez will be eager to secure a victory against a lower-ranked opponent. Malaysia currently holds the 133rd position in the FIFA rankings, while India is slightly ahead at 125th. The last encounter between the two teams occurred in October 2023 during the Merdeka Cup semifinal, where India lost 4-2.
With both teams looking to improve their standings, this friendly promises to be an exciting matchup for fans.
