Theo Walcott will make his debut as a pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day this weekend, promising a fresh and analytical perspective on football coverage. The former England international, who retired from professional football in August 2023, has joined BBC Sport’s team for the new season and will also contribute to the new MOTD Champions League programme starting next week.
Walcott, who began his career with Arsenal at the age of 16 and made headlines by being selected for the World Cup in 2006, is eager to bring a unique approach to sports analysis. He explained, “I aim to offer a positive outlook and delve into how I, as a player, would have reacted in various situations. My focus will be on detailed breakdowns—whether it’s something as simple as body positioning or shirt pulling—that might have disrupted play.”
Walcott added, “We often watch games and think ‘he should have scored,’ but do we really analyze why a player missed? I want to explore these aspects in depth and see how this approach works.”
In addition to his new role as a pundit, Walcott is confident about Arsenal’s prospects this season, predicting they will challenge Manchester City’s dominance. “I’ve said Arsenal will win the league, but they will need to be exceptional to do so,” Walcott remarked. “Manchester City’s start to the season has been formidable, and they have instilled a sense of fear in their opponents.”
Walcott also cautioned against viewing the league as a one-horse race, noting Liverpool’s strong start. “We don’t want the league to become a one-horse race. Liverpool has also made an exceptional start, and people should consider them a serious contender.”
As Walcott steps into his role as a pundit, fans can expect insightful analysis and a fresh perspective from a player who has experienced the highs and lows of top-level football.
