Nathan Tella’s Rise: From Arsenal Heartbreak to £20m Star with Four Trophies in Two Years

Former Arsenal academy player Nathan Tella has proven his doubters wrong, transforming a career setback into a remarkable success story. Released by Arsenal in 2017 after a decade in their youth system, Tella feared his dream of becoming a professional footballer might be over. However, fast-forward to 2024, and the 25-year-old is now a £20-million player with an impressive trophy haul at Bayer Leverkusen.

After his release, Tella’s career was revived when Southampton offered him a lifeline. He went on to make his Premier League debut for the Saints. But it was during his loan spell at Burnley in the 2022/23 season that his potential truly shone. Scoring 17 goals, Tella helped Burnley clinch the Championship title, which caught the attention of Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga side signed him for £20 million last summer.

Tella quickly made an impact in Germany, contributing to Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga season and registering seven goal involvements. He also played a key role in their German Super Cup victory in August 2023, marking his fourth trophy in just 15 months. His trophy collection now matches that of Arsenal since his departure, with the Gunners claiming one FA Cup and three Community Shields in the same period.

Tella’s

Reflecting on his release from Arsenal, Tella admitted it was a devastating moment. “The day that happened, my whole world came crashing down. I was one step away from fulfilling my dream for the club I support,” he shared. Despite the heartbreak, Tella has come full circle, returning to the Emirates for a pre-season friendly last summer as an “invincible” with Leverkusen. “Going back to the Emirates as a champion, as an invincible, it’s an amazing feeling,” he said.

Though his Arsenal journey didn’t end as planned, Tella remains a dedicated fan. “I always check the results. When we’re playing, I’m always quick to see the lineups and how they’re doing. I’m still an Arsenal fan.”

Now a star in Germany, Tella’s journey from rejection to success is a testament to resilience, proving that setbacks can fuel a comeback on the path to greatness.
