Mohamed Salah has confirmed that he is “far away” from agreeing to a new contract with Liverpool as his current deal nears its end. The Egyptian forward, 32, will be free to negotiate with non-English clubs starting on January 1, as he enters the final months of his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Salah, who scored his 20th goal of the season in Liverpool’s commanding 5-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday, extended the Reds’ lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points. Despite speculation surrounding his future, Salah remained focused on the team’s goals.

When asked about his contract situation after the match, Salah told Sky Sports, “No, we are far away from that [contract] and I don’t want to put anything in the media. The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league, and I want to be part of that. I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There are a few other teams catching up with us, and we need to stay focused and humble and go again.”

Salah’s contract impasse follows a similar situation for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom will also be out of contract at the end of the season.

However, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed confidence that the trio’s contract statuses will not affect their performances. “I think I have a lot of control over what they do on the training pitch and in meetings with me,” Slot said. “But talking about their private lives, I don’t have control over them. On the pitch, I expect them to give everything, and I’m pleased with what Virgil, Trent, and Mo bring to the team. “

Earlier in the season, Salah voiced his disappointment at Liverpool’s failure to offer him a new deal. Following the team’s 2-1 win over Manchester City earlier this month, Salah hinted that he may have played his last game against the Premier League champions, leading to further speculation over his future.

Despite the uncertainty, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy remains optimistic that Salah will stay at Anfield. “I hope it’s a little bit of gameplay in terms of the negotiations,” Murphy said on Match of the Day. “Every Liverpool supporter wants him to stay, and I’ve got a really positive feeling that he’ll stay and they’ll get it done. These things take time when you’re talking about huge amounts of money. He’s the most important player Liverpool have right now. They’ve got to get it signed off.”

Salah’s Incredible Form Continues

Salah’s performances this season have been nothing short of remarkable. He has both scored and assisted in eight different Premier League matches this season, a record for any player in a single Premier League campaign. In just 18 appearances, Salah has contributed to 30 goals (17 goals and 13 assists), the fewest games any player has needed to reach 30 goal involvements in a Premier League season.

In 2024, Salah has contributed to 52 goals across all competitions (29 goals and 23 assists), more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues. Notably, Salah has scored 20 or more goals in each of his eight seasons with Liverpool, making him one of the most consistent top scorers in Premier League history. Only Alan Shearer (10) and Harry Kane (9) have more 20+ goal campaigns than the Egyptian.

As Salah’s contract situation remains unresolved, his stellar form ensures he remains crucial to Liverpool’s ambitions this season.
