Manchester United have reached an agreement with Lille for a £52 million deal to secure the services of young defender Leny Yoro, as the Red Devils intensify their search for defensive reinforcements.
Yoro, just 18 years old, has been a fixture in Lille’s lineup since the age of 16 and is facing a crucial decision about his future amid interest from Real Madrid. While there is reportedly interest from the youngster in a move to Spain, Real Madrid are hesitant to meet Lille’s asking price and are considering making a move next year instead.
United, however, are keen to finalize the transfer and are simultaneously closing in on Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich. Sources indicate that United manager Erik ten Hag had previously planned for De Ligt to partner with Lisandro Martinez, but the potential signing of Yoro could prompt a change in those plans.
The move for Yoro would represent another significant investment in United’s defense, potentially taking their spending on center-backs to nearly £100 million. In addition to Yoro, United have also shown interest in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, though several bids for the player have been rebuffed.
Ten Hag is reportedly targeting two defenders from his shortlist, with decisions influenced by player willingness to move and the selling clubs’ stances. The financial aspects may also require United to consider selling Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire to facilitate these transfers.

United have already bolstered their finances with the departures of Donny van de Beek to Girona and Willy Kambwala to Villarreal. Defensive frailties plagued United last season, exacerbated by significant injury issues, prompting the club’s aggressive pursuit of defensive reinforcements.
In addition to their defensive pursuits, United have secured Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for around £40 million and continue to monitor PSG’s Manuel Ugarte as a potential midfield addition, although acquiring him may necessitate offloading Casemiro.
The developments underscore United’s proactive approach to rebuilding their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, with defensive solidity a top priority under Ten Hag’s leadership.”
