Manchester United’s stance on Donny van de Beek has become unmistakably clear as they prepare to offload the Dutch midfielder at a substantial loss. Van de Beek is on the verge of a permanent move to Spanish side Girona. Marking the end of a tumultuous four-year tenure at Old Trafford following his £40 million transfer from Ajax.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils will receive just €450,000 (£380,000) upfront for Van de Beek. The deal includes potential add-ons that could raise the total to €4.5 million (£3.8 million), but these conditions seem uncertain. Making it possible for United to recover only a fraction of their initial investment.
Underperformance and injuries have marred Van de Beek’s time at Manchester United. Since his arrival, the 27-year-old has made only 62 appearances and scored a mere two goals. His struggles led to a loan spell with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in January. Where he made just eight appearances and faced exclusion from the club’s European squad by then-coach Dino Toppmoller.
Reflecting on Van de Beek’s challenges, Toppmoller stated, “He’s only played a total of four games in the last two years, so it won’t happen overnight. But I have 100 percent confidence in his quality; he’ll definitely help us in the second half of the season. I told Donny that I was sorry but also what I expected from him now.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has also addressed Van de Beek’s difficulties, attributing them largely to injury woes. “He has had many injuries, first of all,” Ten Hag explained. “From the first moment I came in here at Manchester United, he wasn’t the player he was at Ajax because he was injured. So many times he was not available, and then he struggled for a long time to recover from that injury. That is probably the main reason why he was not playing.”
Ten Hag further elaborated on the competitive nature of the squad, which limited Van de Beek’s opportunities. “We decided for a loan in the summer but it didn’t come, and then his opportunities were few because we make appointments and agreements with players and contract players in that position. The competition was high.”
Van de Beek’s impending move to Girona symbolizes a fresh start for the midfielder. Offering him a chance to revive his career away from the pressures and challenges he faced at Old Trafford. For Manchester United, it represents a willingness to cut their losses and move forward from a transfer that didn’t pan out as hoped.
