Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek received widespread praise for his outstanding performance against Rosenborg.
The Red Devils began their pre-season campaign in Trondheim, Norway, and suffered a narrow defeat at the Lerkendal Stadion. Noah Emmanuel Jean Holm scored the game’s only goal in the 93rd minute, marking a frustrating performance for United. However, Vitek’s stellar display stood out despite the loss.
The Czech Republic youth international, who spent last season on loan at Accrington Stanley, was the only player to complete the full 90 minutes on Monday evening. In a match where United’s youthful side managed just five shots compared to the hosts’ 22, Vitek was the standout performer.
“We are disappointed as I feel like we should always aim for a win. The manager said we don’t play friendlies as it is in our DNA,” Vitek remarked after the game. “We should demand more. We are building up now as it is only our first week of pre-season, so we are still waiting for some more boys [to arrive back] from their internationals. But as I said, in the end, all that matters is winning.”
The young goalkeeper expressed gratitude for the opportunity to impress under Erik ten Hag. “It is really good that the young lads are getting the opportunity. When you step on the field, you have to show yourself,” Vitek added. “It is a big opportunity in front of a lot of people watching you. You have to demand the best from yourself.”
Despite the disappointing result, the 20-year-old left a significant impression on supporters. Fans labeled Vitek a ‘gem,’ with some suggesting he could challenge Andre Onana for a spot this season.

“I mentioned this earlier about Vitek; I was admiring him in the first half. He’s definitely a gem,” said one user on X. “Promote him to be our new No.2 then!!!” added another.
“Hope he can be our next No.1 without us having to go buy someone else,” one fan pleaded. “He might be the future,” commented another, while a further user suggested he was “Better than Onana.”
“Incredible shot-stopping skills with a commanding presence and great GK positioning,” praised another fan. “Sort out his ball distribution, and we will have a worthy competitor for Onana.”
United treble-winner Ronny Johnsen also commended Vitek. “The saves he made were very important. For a goalkeeper, to come in and make saves like this in your first game is crucial. He has stood up and made himself big – which he is,” said the Red Devils legend.
