The football world was abuzz when Lionel Messi made the surprising decision to join MLS side Inter Miami on a two-and-a-half-year contract in July 2023. This move shocked many, especially given that the Argentine superstar remains in peak form and had recently lifted the 2022 World Cup trophy.
Messi has quickly established himself as a crucial player for Tata Martino’s squad, contributing significantly to Miami’s success. As the team sits atop the MLS standings with four matches remaining, speculation is growing about Messi’s future after he confirmed he does not intend to retire with the club.
According to reports from El Nacional, Messi plans to return to his boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, once his contract with Inter Miami expires. This sentiment aligns with Messi’s past declarations of his desire to return to Argentina. In 2016, he stated, “If I go back to Argentina tomorrow, which I would love, the club I would play for would be Newell’s.”
However, Messi has also expressed concerns about the current situation in Argentina, particularly regarding safety. In an interview with TyC Sports, he mentioned, “My dream is to play at Newell’s, but I don’t know what will happen… I have a family, and my children come first. I want them to grow up in a calm place, being able to enjoy life with security. It is very ugly to see the things that happen in Argentina, where you can go out on the street and be at risk.”
After recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the Copa America final in July, Messi returned to action last week, scoring two goals in a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union. This performance brought his season totals to 14 goals and 14 assists in MLS. With Miami holding a nine-point lead over second-placed FC Cincinnati, the team is also in contention for the Supporter’s Shield.
As the football landscape continues to evolve, fans will be eagerly watching Messi’s next steps, particularly as he eyes a heartfelt return to Newell’s Old Boys.
