As the international break comes to a close, preparations are ramping up for the Premier League’s return, with Liverpool set to host Chelsea at Anfield this Sunday. Under the management of Arne Slot, the Reds sit atop the league table with six wins and just one defeat so far this season. However, they now face a challenging schedule ahead.
Liverpool welcomes back several key players, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kostas Tsimikas, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Curtis Jones, giving Slot a chance to assess his squad. However, tougher decisions loom regarding the availability of Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz, who are further afield.
Team-Mate Backs Kelleher
Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to step in as Liverpool’s goalkeeper against Chelsea, following Alisson Becker’s injury absence. Kelleher did not participate in Liverpool’s recent win over Crystal Palace, as he was sidelined due to illness, allowing Viteslav Jaros to take the field.
Kelleher has since recovered and played in both of the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League matches, demonstrating his readiness to return. Although he faced criticism for a costly error against Greece, where he mishandled the ball leading to a goal, his teammate Troy Parrott came to his defense.
“It’s frustrating for all of us, but everyone makes mistakes,” Parrott stated. “Caoimh doesn’t make many, and everyone in the dressing room supports him. He’s mentally strong enough to deal with it, and we need to move on from that setback.”

Alexis Mac Allister Update
Alexis Mac Allister, who suffered a groin injury in Liverpool’s last match, has traveled with the Argentina squad during the international break. Although he missed the team’s draw with Venezuela, reports indicate that he has returned to full training and is in contention to play against Bolivia.
While this news is promising for Liverpool, the timing could complicate matters for Slot as they hope Mac Allister will fit for the Chelsea clash.
Koeman on Van Dijk’s Return
Captain Virgil van Dijk has returned to Liverpool earlier than expected after receiving a controversial red card in a match against Hungary, which resulted in a suspension for the Netherlands’ subsequent game. Initially intending to stay with the national squad, the coaches decided to send him back to Anfield to ensure he maintains his conditioning.
“His eagerness to stay with the group reflects a great attitude,” said Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman. “However, considering the intensity of modern matches, it was logical to send him home for his benefit.”
As Liverpool prepares for their showdown with Chelsea, Slot will be keenly monitoring the fitness levels of his players while aiming to maintain their strong start to the season.
