Dirk Kuyt, a former Liverpool striker, has shared his thoughts on Xabi Alonso’s surprising decision to turn down the Liverpool job. Kuyt, who netted 71 goals for the club, expressed his belief that Alonso might regret his choice. Given his deep connection to Liverpool.
Kuyt told Ladbrokes 1-2-Free, “I didn’t discuss the Liverpool job with Xabi earlier this year, so I’m not privy to his exact thoughts. However, when a prestigious club like Liverpool approaches you, especially when you have a history with them. It takes a lot of courage to turn them down. Nonetheless, I believe Alonso had his reasons.”
He continued, “Alonso is in the midst of building an extraordinary career. What he accomplished with Bayer Leverkusen last season was exceptional. He likely felt he wasn’t finished with his current role and wanted to continue growing as a manager. Perhaps he’ll consider Liverpool again in the future. His decision certainly isn’t due to a lack of interest in the club.”
Kuyt acknowledged the challenge of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, noting the high expectations for anyone taking on that role. He added, “Managing Liverpool after Klopp would require extensive experience. Xabi is still early in his managerial career, despite his success. Choosing to stay with Leverkusen shows wisdom and bravery. Opportunities to manage a club like Liverpool are rare, and I wonder if he’ll get another chance.”

Alonso made a significant impact at Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to a league and cup double, including the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles. His team also reached the Europa League final and set a new European record with 51 matches unbeaten, including a flawless Bundesliga season.
Liverpool has since appointed former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot as their new head coach, with his tenure beginning with a series of pre-season games in the United States later this month.
