An inquest has confirmed that former Aston Villa striker Gary Shaw tragically died from a severe head injury following a fall outside his home. A neighbor discovered the 63-year-old Villa legend collapsed on the pavement at 1:20 AM on 6 September after he had been socializing with friends.
Shaw was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he passed away on 16 September due to the severity of his injury.
At the Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court, senior coroner Louise Hunt delivered a verdict of accidental death.
Shaw, who began his career at his boyhood club Aston Villa, scored 79 goals in 213 appearances for the club. He earned significant recognition for his talent, winning the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year in 1981 and the European Young Player of the Year award in 1982. He also represented England’s Under-21s during his career.
Beyond Villa, Shaw had stints at Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, and Shrewsbury Town. After retiring from football in 1992, he worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador at Villa Park.
In October, supporters gathered at Villa Park to pay tribute to Shaw, as his funeral procession passed by en route to Sutton Coldfield Crematorium for the service.
