Liverpool’s new head coach, Arne Slot, has emphasized that his playing style won’t be drastically different from Jurgen Klopp’s, though it’s evident that tactical adjustments are underway.

In the pre-season match against Real Betis in Pittsburgh, Slot fielded as many potential starters as possible. While some players showed promise in the new system, others faced challenges.

Mo Salah, showcasing his new streamlined haircut, remained a constant threat on the right flank and linked up beautifully with Dominik Szoboszlai for the game’s only goal. Conor Bradley continued his impressive 2024 form, and Fabio Carvalho displayed glimpses of his talent in the first half.

Curtis Jones emphasized before the game that Liverpool won’t be as direct or frantic as they were under Klopp, and it’s clear that some kinks need to be ironed out. Slot acknowledges the need for these adjustments to happen quickly. With Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch soon joining the squad in the United States, the execution of Slot’s strategy might proceed more smoothly in upcoming matches.

However, Liverpool’s attempt to play out from the back through two deep center-midfielders led to several dangerous turnovers. The opposition pressed Wataru Endo too easily, and separate occasions saw center-backs Jarrell Quansah and Sepp van den Berg nearly put their team in jeopardy.

A New Star Emerges: Trey Nyoni

Amidst the tactical tweaks and growing pains, one young player stood out: Trey Nyoni. The 17-year-old, who turned 17 on June 30, was selected ahead of Stefan Bajcetic and Tyler Morton to replace the injured Curtis Jones in a deep midfield role and excelled.

Nyoni, wearing the No. 98 jersey, played a crucial part in the build-up to Szoboszlai’s goal and helped create Liverpool’s best chance in the second half. Comfortable on the ball, unafraid to tackle, and elegant in his play, Nyoni received more time on the pitch than any of his teammates.

Despite his reluctance to single out players, Slot couldn’t help but praise the teenager born in 2007. “He did really well but he just turned 17. His body has to grow, we have to be really careful with him,” Slot admitted.

Though Nyoni “needs some time to grow to play at a Premier League level,” Liverpool fans have every reason to be excited. Having made his first-team debut at 16, earned a Carabao Cup winner’s medal, and played for England up to the U-18 level, Nyoni’s future looks bright.

Liverpool’s Pre-Season Schedule

Liverpool’s pre-season continues with matches against Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sevilla.
