Former England striker Alan Shearer has urged Gabriel Jesus to take on a greater role for Arsenal following Bukayo Saka’s injury during the team’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Saka left the match in the first half, raising concerns about his availability for the crucial fixtures ahead.
The injury to Saka, a key contributor to Arsenal’s attack with his goals and assists, comes at a challenging time as the Gunners face a packed schedule across December and January. Manager Mikel Arteta expressed concern, stating, “He will have to be assessed, but we are pretty worried, yes.”
Shearer, speaking on Match of the Day, highlighted the importance of Jesus stepping up in Saka’s absence. “Shearer said it will be a big loss for Arsenal.” “[They will miss] not only Saka’s goals but his assists, which is why I think it is important for Jesus to step up and try to replace him.”
Jesus delivered a standout performance at Selhurst Park, scoring twice and building on his midweek hat-trick in the League Cup against Palace. Shearer praised Arteta’s faith in the Brazilian forward, saying, “You can see he’s got a pace about him again and feels as if he belongs back in the team. His all-around play was very, very good.”

Arteta echoed the sentiment, commending Jesus for his consistency and work ethic. “I’m so happy for him; he fully deserves it,” Arteta said. “He’s been patient, made some changes since July, and it’s paying off now.”
In addition to Jesus’ two goals, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice were also on target, showcasing Arsenal’s attacking depth. The Gunners will hope to maintain momentum as they prepare to host Ipswich on Friday, followed by key matches against Brentford, Brighton, and a high-stakes FA Cup clash with Manchester United.
With Saka’s injury potentially sidelining him, all eyes will be on Gabriel Jesus to lead the line and help Arsenal navigate a pivotal stretch in their season.
