Roy Keane, renowned for his fiery takes as a football pundit, may find himself red-faced after another controversial critique. The former Manchester United captain targeted Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold during the Premier League clash against the Red Devils at Anfield on January 5.
Keane, speaking in the Sky Sports studio, was scathing in his assessment of Alexander-Arnold’s first-half performance. “Trent Alexander-Arnold has been all over the place defensively. His defending has been schoolboy stuff. He’s got to do better,” Keane stated. He even joked, “They’re talking about him going to Real Madrid. The way he’s defending, he’s going to Tranmere Rovers after this.”
Despite Keane’s remarks, Alexander-Arnold played a crucial role in Liverpool’s performance. After Lisandro Martinez opened the scoring for United, Cody Gakpo equalized for the Reds. Mohamed Salah later converted a penalty to give Liverpool the lead before Amad Diallo salvaged a point for United with a late equalizer.
Speculation about Alexander-Arnold’s future has been rife, with his contract set to expire in July. Real Madrid had been linked with the 26-year-old following Dani Carvajal’s season-ending ACL injury. However, it appears Alexander-Arnold will remain at Liverpool until the summer.

This isn’t the first time Keane’s blunt commentary has been called into question. In March, he criticized Manchester City striker Erling Haaland after a goalless draw against Arsenal. Keane described Haaland’s overall play as “so poor,” likening it to that of a League Two player.
Haaland responded dismissively, stating, “I don’t really care that much about that man, so that’s all right.” City manager Pep Guardiola also came to his star striker’s defense, calling Keane’s comments surprising. Guardiola emphasized Haaland’s contributions, including his pivotal role in City’s success during the 2023/24 campaign, where he netted 27 Premier League goals and six in the Champions League.
Keane has occasionally softened his stance after his initial critiques. Following Haaland’s dominant performance against Nottingham Forest, Keane acknowledged, “In terms of a goal-scorer, he is absolutely amazing. There’s no doubting his quality in terms of his finishing.”
As Keane continues to deliver his no-holds-barred opinions, players like Alexander-Arnold and Haaland seem determined to let their performances speak louder than his words.
