England’s aspirations of securing a fifth Champions League spot were dealt a blow following the European defeats suffered by and West Ham United.
The upcoming Champions League season will see an expansion to 36 clubs, compared to the current 32. With each country contributing five teams based on their league performance. However, England’s chances of being among the top two countries securing this privilege were significantly impacted by Thursday’s results.
West Ham, the winners of last season’s Conference League, conceded two late goals against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. Meanwhile, Liverpool faced a disastrous 3-0 defeat at home against Atalanta, setting up a challenging return leg in Italy.
Italy currently leads the rankings with an average performance score of 18.428, followed by Germany with 16.785, and England lagging slightly behind at 16.750.

Despite Serie A’s absence of teams in the Champions League, wins for Atalanta and Roma in the Europa League. Along with Fiorentina’s draw in the Conference League, have significantly boosted Italy’s coefficient.
While Germany’s Leverkusen secured a crucial victory, mixed results for other German clubs kept them ahead of England in the standings.
As it stands, Italy and Germany are in prime positions to claim the additional Champions League spots. Potentially benefiting fifth-placed Serie A team Roma and Bundesliga’s fifth-placed Dortmund.
However, teams like Roma, Dortmund, and Aston Villa from England, who hold a slender lead in their respective European ties. Still have the opportunity to influence their country’s coefficient and enhance their chances of securing additional Champions League berths.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s manager, emphasized the importance of respecting their opponents and acknowledged the significance of their first-leg victory over Lille in the Europa League.
