First, it was Albanian fans taunting their Italian rivals by snapping uncooked spaghetti in front of them. Then, Austrian supporters joined in the fun, breaking baguettes in the faces of French fans before their Euro 2024 match.
Visitors flocking to Germany for the month-long tournament are engaging in light-hearted “food wars,” adding a playful twist to the event. This amusing trend involves desecrating national foods, which has sparked more laughter than outrage. Food-themed banners have also started appearing in stadiums.
“Fondue better than goulash,” read one at the Switzerland vs. Hungary match. “Eat Pasta, Run Fasta,” proclaimed an Italian poster at the Albania game. Polish fans displayed, “Kielbasa [sausage] better than gouda,” against the Netherlands.

Interestingly, these food insults have sometimes brought bad luck. Albania lost 2-1 to Italy after their pasta-breaking antics, and Austria was defeated 1-0 by France.
Host nation Germany is relieved that, apart from minor clashes in Gelsenkirchen, feared hooliganism has been minimal. The tournament has seen more snapped pasta and bread than broken bones and bottles.
“Thank God the violence has not been there. Instead, we’re seeing a lot of fun and banter between fans with these hilarious ‘food wars’,” said food stall-holder Koch in Hamburg. “Just don’t mess with our currywurst – or else there will be trouble, I warn you!” he added, referring to the ubiquitous sausage and spicy sauce available at his kiosk and many other street corners in Germany.
The good-natured “food wars” are adding a unique and entertaining element to Euro 2024, showcasing the lighter side of fan interactions during the tournament.
