Ecuador defeated Venezuela 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers on Friday, moving to second place in the South American standings. Despite starting the qualifiers with a three-point deficit for fielding Byron Castillo, who was later deemed ineligible during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Ecuador is now just three points behind leaders Argentina.

Enner Valencia, Ecuador’s all-time leading goal-scorer, played a key role with two goals. He opened the scoring in the 39th minute, firing a powerful right-footed shot from a tight angle after breaking through Venezuela’s defense. Just after halftime, Valencia doubled the lead with a classy finish over goalkeeper Rafael Romo following a run down the left flank. He missed an opportunity for a hat-trick in the 69th minute when his penalty went off target. Jhonder Cádiz pulled one back for Venezuela in injury time, but it was too late to change the outcome.
Venezuela’s poor run continued as they have now gone nine consecutive games without a win. They remain in eighth place but still have a chance to qualify for their first-ever World Cup.
Ecuador’s strong performance has put them in a favorable position to secure another World Cup appearance. Later on Friday, Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, faced Uruguay, who are currently in third place, adding further excitement to the qualifiers.
