Angel Di Maria, the 36-year-old winger from Argentina, faces a grave threat in his hometown, Rosario. The anonymous warning targeted his family, should he choose to play for Rosario Central again. This threat follows Di Maria’s recent expression of interest in returning to his childhood club.
The threat has sparked investigations by Argentine police and prosecutors. Di Maria, who was touring with the Argentina national team in the United States at the time, usually stays in the Funes Hills Miraflores condominium when visiting Rosario. Staff at the condominium discovered the threatening package.
Local security officials believe such threats aim to create fear and social unrest among the population. Rosario has been plagued by violence due to conflicts between rival drug-dealing groups, resulting in a significantly higher homicide rate compared to the national average.
This isn’t the first time a football star has been targeted in Rosario. Last year, unidentified gunmen attacked a supermarket owned by a relative of Lionel Messi, leaving a message threatening Messi himself.
