Craig Bellamy is a potential candidate for the Wales manager role following the sacking of Rob Page. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is evaluating its options, with Bellamy. Who earned 78 caps for Wales, emerging as a notable contender. Bellamy recently served as interim manager for Burnley after Vincent Kompany left for Bayern Munich.
The FAW is not rushing to make a decision, given that Wales’ next matches are scheduled for September in a Nations League double-header against Turkey and Montenegro. The association is reportedly interested in appointing a young, high-profile manager. Although they have not appointed a non-Welshman since Bobby Gould in 1995, they are open to the idea.
Ryan Giggs, who previously brought Page onto his coaching staff before stepping down in 2020 due to a trial, is interested in returning to management. Giggs, 50, is currently the director of football at Salford City, where he is also a co-owner. Matty Jones, the manager of Wales Under-21s, has also impressed in his role.
Giggs previously beat his former teammate Bellamy, 44, to the job in 2018. But Bellamy has since gained further experience working with Kompany at Anderlecht and Burnley.
Another potential candidate is Osian Roberts, who was an assistant manager to Chris Coleman during Euro 2016 and recently guided Como to Serie A as caretaker manager. Roberts has also served as a technical director for Morocco and as an assistant to Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace.
Vieira, now the head coach at Strasbourg, is among several prominent former Premier League players who completed their pro licence with the FAW. Mikel Arteta and Thierry Henry, currently managing France’s Olympic and Under-21 teams, are other notable graduates. Although Henry has previously been linked to the Wales job, it is unclear if he is currently being considered.
The FAW’s search for a new manager includes a diverse pool of experienced candidates. Reflecting their openness to finding the best fit for the national team’s future.
