Dan Ashworth, an esteemed figure known for his impactful stints at West Brom, England, and Brighton, was placed on gardening leave by Newcastle at the end of February amid swirling speculation about his future. Now, United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has identified Ashworth as his top choice to oversee the football operations at Old Trafford.

Despite Ashworth still being under contract with Newcastle, talks between the two clubs regarding compensation are ongoing. Negotiations are being led by Newcastle’s chief executive, Darren Eales, who is determined to secure substantial compensation for Ashworth’s departure.

While Newcastle initially demanded £20 million to reduce Ashworth’s gardening leave, they seem open to negotiation. However, they remain steadfast in their stance that they will only allow Ashworth to depart if they receive suitable compensation.

Although Newcastle is hesitant to allow Dan Ashworth to commence his new role before summer, they may reconsider if the compensation offered meets their expectations.

Newcastle’s primary candidate to succeed Ashworth is Paul Mitchell

As discussions with United progress, Newcastle is actively scouting for Ashworth’s replacement. At the forefront of their list is Paul Mitchell, renowned for his successful tenures at Monaco and Tottenham. Brentford’s Phil Giles, West Ham’s Tim Steidten, and former Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto are also under consideration.

To facilitate the search, Newcastle has engaged the recruitment firm Odgers Berndtson as intermediaries. Mitchell, particularly eager to return to the Premier League, may transition swiftly given his relatively short gardening leave.

While internal candidate Steve Nickson is being considered, Newcastle seems inclined to seek external options to fill Ashworth’s role promptly.

For Manchester United, Newcastle’s proactive approach in finding a replacement bodes well. As they aim for Ashworth to commence his duties swiftly amid their challenging season.
