Additionally, Nicholl made significant contributions to Southampton, amassing 228 appearances for the club. His managerial career saw him take the helm at Southampton from 1985 to 1991 before leading Walsall for three years. He also served as assistant manager for the Northern Ireland national team from 1998 to 2000.

On the international stage, Nicholl earned 51 caps for Northern Ireland, representing his country in the 1982 World Cup in Spain. His impact extended beyond the field, as he became a respected figure within the football community.

However, Nicholl’s later years were marred by health struggles, as highlighted in the 2017 BBC documentary “Dementia, Football, and Me.” In the documentary, Nicholl revealed his challenges with memory loss, attributing it to the repeated heading of footballs during his playing days.

Tributes poured in following Nicholl’s passing, with the Irish Football Association expressing their condolences and Villa releasing a statement mourning the loss of their former player. Former teammates and colleagues also remembered Nicholl fondly, reflecting on his remarkable career and his enduring legacy in the world of football.
