Chelsea’s Managerial Pursuit: Top Target Emerges as Talks with Kieran McKenna End

The quest for Chelsea’s new head coach may be nearing its conclusion as official discussions proceed with Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, following Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna’s withdrawal from consideration.

Initially, Maresca, McKenna, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank comprised the shortlist to succeed Mauricio Pochettino, who mutually departed the club at the end of the Premier League season.

Recent days have seen Chelsea engage in talks with several highly-regarded young coaches, including McKenna, who emerged as an early favorite for the role. However, despite discussions with Chelsea, McKenna has reportedly opted out of contention as the club refines its search.

Reports suggest that McKenna would prefer a return to Old Trafford if Manchester United were to part ways with Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, according to the Telegraph, Maresca, aged 44, has become Chelsea’s primary target after the club sought official permission to approach the Italian. Negotiations with Maresca have progressed significantly, with Chelsea keen on securing his services from Leicester City, which could require around £10 million to release him from his current contract.

With a background working alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Maresca guided Leicester to promotion back to the Premier League in his debut season, despite a dip in form towards the season’s end. His vision aligns with Chelsea’s ambitious project, as evidenced by the club’s positive impression of him during discussions.

Maresca is now the frontrunner ahead of Frank and former Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi, poised to become Chelsea’s seventh permanent manager in five years.
