Chelsea hero Joe Cole has issued a rallying cry to the club’s new manager, Enzo Maresca. Following a turbulent period under previous managers, Cole believes Maresca’s primary challenge is to re-establish Chelsea as the dominant force in London.
Maresca, who recently signed a five-year deal with the Blues after guiding Leicester back to the Premier League, inherits a team that finished a distant second to city rivals Arsenal last season. The 5-0 drubbing at the Emirates stands as a stark reminder of the gulf that needs to be bridged.
“Chelsea finished the season very well,” Cole acknowledged to Mirror Football, “now it’s crucial they take back London. I think that’s important.” He highlighted the strides made by both Tottenham and Arsenal, emphasizing the fierce competition within the capital.
Chelsea’s recent struggles have seen three permanent managers come and go in under two years. Cole, a Stamford Bridge favorite, is urging the club to break this cycle and give Maresca the time he needs. “He’s done a fantastic job at Leicester,” Cole said, “He’s still young and will need time, which is what I say with every new manager that comes in.”
The former midfielder criticized the club’s recent managerial merry-go-round, suggesting a lack of patience has been detrimental. “Every manager has been hard done by,” he stated, advocating for a more long-term approach. “The owners at Chelsea are very data driven it seems,” he observed, “but there are two things coming out the club – the manager needs time and the communication needs to be improved.”
Cole believes clearer communication from ownership is key to keeping fans invested. “Supporters feel part of the club and want to see the owner and CEO explaining their decisions,” he emphasized.
