Valencia CF has officially appointed Carlos Corberan as their new head coach, with the Spaniard signing a contract until 2027. The announcement follows Valencia’s decision to activate the release clause in Corberan’s contract with West Bromwich Albion.
A New Chapter for Carlos Corberan
Corberan, a former Valencia youth player, described leaving The Hawthorns as the “hardest decision” of his career. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, he expressed deep gratitude to West Brom and its fans:
“I cannot begin to explain how I feel about West Bromwich Albion, its fans, and everyone associated with the club. In my more than two years here, I have only felt LOVE from this community. The decision to leave has been the hardest of my life. There will ALWAYS be a place in my heart for this special club, and I hope one day I can return to thank you all for your incredible support.”
Transformative Tenure at West Brom
Corberan joined West Brom in October 2022, stepping in after Steve Bruce’s departure. In his first full season (2023/24), he revitalized the team, guiding them to the Sky Bet Championship play-offs. Though they fell to eventual winners Southampton in the semi-finals, his tactical acumen left a lasting impact.
This season, West Brom sits seventh in the Championship, narrowly outside the play-off places on goal difference. Under Corberan, they have lost just once in their last 14 matches. The team is set to face Derby County on Boxing Day, with the match broadcast live on Sky Sports Football.
Interim Leadership at West Brom
In the wake of Corberan’s departure, Chris Brunt, Damia Abella, and Boaz Myhill will temporarily oversee first-team duties. West Brom chairman Shilen Patel thanked Corberan for his contributions during a challenging period for the club:
“I want to thank Carlos for all of his hard work since his arrival at Albion during one of the most challenging times in the club’s modern era. I am grateful for his contributions and wish Carlos and his family all the best on his new journey.”
Challenges Ahead at Valencia
Corberan takes over a struggling Valencia side, currently second-bottom in LaLiga with just two league wins this season. The club recently dismissed Ruben Baraja following a string of poor results.
Valencia fans will hope Corberan’s managerial expertise can steer the team away from relegation and back to the competitive heights the club once enjoyed. For Corberan, the move represents a homecoming and a fresh challenge in one of Europe’s top leagues.
