Blow for England as Maguire Misses Euros with Injury, Kane Offers Support

Harry Maguire’s hopes of competing in Euro 2024 have been dashed due to a lingering calf injury. The 31-year-old defender, a mainstay in England’s backline for years, expressed his deep disappointment on social media, stating, “I am absolutely gutted” to miss the tournament.

Maguire revealed he might have pushed his recovery too hard in an attempt to be fit for the Euros. Despite his dedication, the injury wouldn’t allow him to participate. He pledged his unwavering support for the team, vowing to cheer them on from the stands.

Following Maguire’s announcement, England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Declan Rice offered their sympathies with heart emojis on social media. Manchester United’s official account also chimed in with a message of solidarity: “We’re all with you, H.”

Manager Gareth Southgate confirmed Maguire’s absence alongside Jack Grealish and others due to injury concerns and squad limitations. Southgate elaborated that even with a full recovery, Maguire wouldn’t have been available for the group stage matches. The decision to omit Maguire stemmed from the need for a balanced squad with sufficient defensive cover.

Maguire’s absence comes as a blow to England’s backline, but the team remains hopeful with a strong defensive contingent. The focus now shifts to the remaining players as they prepare to challenge for the Euro 2024 title.
