Following Maguire’s announcement, England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Declan Rice offered their sympathies with heart emojis on social media. Manchester United’s official account also chimed in with a message of solidarity: “We’re all with you, H.”
Manager Gareth Southgate confirmed Maguire’s absence alongside Jack Grealish and others due to injury concerns and squad limitations. Southgate elaborated that even with a full recovery, Maguire wouldn’t have been available for the group stage matches. The decision to omit Maguire stemmed from the need for a balanced squad with sufficient defensive cover.
