Barcelona is considering making an offer to departing Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara. Despite some concerns within the club about his ability to perform at the highest level.
Thiago, who will become a free agent on June 30 when his contract with Liverpool expires, announced his departure after four injury-plagued seasons at Anfield. Reports from Spanish newspaper AS indicate that the anticipated arrival of Hansi Flick as head coach is influencing the 33-year-old’s potential move to Barcelona.
Thiago’s fluency in German, acquired during his successful stint at Bayern Munich, could help him serve as a liaison between Flick and the players at Barcelona. Additionally, Barcelona is also considering another former Bayern midfielder, Javi Martinez, for similar reasons. Martinez, who turns 36 in September, has recently been playing in Qatar and is a Spanish native fluent in German.
Thiago’s time at Liverpool was marred by injuries, limiting him to just one appearance in the most recent season and only 18 league games the previous campaign. Over four seasons, he managed only 98 appearances due to constant injuries. Which has fueled doubts about his ability to continue playing at a top level. Regardless of his next destination, Thiago is expected to take a significant pay cut.
In a farewell message to Liverpool fans, Thiago expressed his gratitude:
“Appreciation and gratitude – they are two words that come to mind on the day I have to say goodbye to all of you, Reds. Thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of this city, this club, and this community. The continuous support I have received since day one has been incredible: Anfield cheering, the Kop chanting… amazing, overwhelming. A very unique fan base for a unique club.
“These past four years have been a time of learning for me and my family. Some wins, some defeats, but without a doubt, a life-changing experience. Teammates, coaches, staff, and club employees: you were all part of it.
“And to the fans, I don’t have the words. Just know you will have my deepest gratitude forever. Thank you, it was an honour. All the best always, Liverpool FC.”
Thiago’s next move remains uncertain, but his potential role at Barcelona highlights the strategic considerations behind his transfer amidst his persistent injury challenges.
