Ashalata Devi has made history as the first Indian woman to play 100 international football matches. The captain of the Indian women’s football team achieved this milestone during the opening match against Pakistan at the SAFF Women’s Championships 2024 in Kathmandu.
With this achievement, Ashalata joins the ranks of Sunil Chhetri as only the second Indian footballer to reach the 100-cap mark. Known for her leadership and defensive skills, Ashalata has been a cornerstone of the national team for over a decade. She received a nomination for the AFC Player of the Year award in 2019, showcasing her status as one of India’s top football talents.
Born on July 3, 1993, in Imphal, Manipur, Ashalata began her football journey at 13 after being inspired by boys playing in her school. She quickly rose through the ranks, joining the U17 Indian women’s team at 15 and transitioning from midfielder to defender, a position that suited her playing style.
A stalwart in the backline, Ashalata has helped India secure numerous titles, including South Asian Games gold medals in 2016 and 2019, and four consecutive SAFF Women’s Championships from 2012 to 2019. She has captained the team since taking over from legendary player Bembem Devi.
In addition to her national success, Ashalata played for Maldivian club New Radiant in the Dhivehi Premier League, becoming only the second Indian woman to play for an overseas club. She won the Indian Women’s League three times and earned the AIFF Women’s Player of the Year award for the 2018-19 season.
Ashalata’s dedication and talent have not only set records but have also paved the way for future generations of women in Indian football.
