Arsenal Sign Bournemouth’s Neto on Loan as Ramsdale Nears Southampton Switch

Arsenal have made surprising last-minute move on transfer deadline day, securing services of Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto on a season-long loan. The Gunners had been actively seeking additional options between the posts this summer, a need that intensified with Aaron Ramsdale’s imminent departure to Southampton.

Ramsdale, who joined Arsenal from Sheffield United and previously played for Bournemouth, opted for a permanent £25 million transfer to newly-promoted Southampton, leaving a vacancy at the Emirates. While initially linked with a potential return to his former club, Ramsdale chose St. Mary’s as his next destination, prompting Arsenal to find a backup for David Raya.

In search of a short-term solution, Arsenal struck a deal with Bournemouth for the 35-year-old Neto. The Brazilian veteran has been with the Cherries since 2022 after leaving Barcelona and has made 62 appearances, including starts in their first two Premier League games this season. Despite initial interest in acquiring a long-term replacement, Arsenal settled on loan deal with no option or obligation to buy.

Bournemouth facilitated Neto’s exit by signing Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea, allowing them to release the experienced goalkeeper. Neto’s impressive resume includes stints at Fiorentina, Juventus, and Valencia before he joined the Premier League.

Arsenal explored other goalkeeping options throughout the summer, including Espanyol’s Joan Garcia. But the Spanish club’s insistence on meeting his €30 million (£25.2 million) release clause deterred them. Arsenal also linked with Wolves’ Daniel Bentley as a potential third-choice stopper, but stalled negotiations hindered progress.

Earlier in the summer, Arsenal bolstered their goalkeeping ranks by signing Ajax starlet Tommy Setford, who is considered a-long-term prospect. Reflecting on his move, Setford expressed his excitement, stating, “I want to thank Arsenal for this opportunity. I can’t wait to hit the ground running. I’m looking forward to learning new things next season and pushing myself to another level.”

With Neto’s arrival, Arsenal have finally addressed their immediate goalkeeping needs. Providing much-needed depth and experience as they look to challenge on multiple fronts this season.
