Zimbabwe Cricket Clears Madhevere and Mavuta for Return to Action

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has given the green light for Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta to resume competitive cricket following the completion of their four-month suspensions for drug use. The ban was imposed after the duo tested positive for a recreational drug during an internal doping test in December.

As part of their rehabilitation process, Madhevere and Mavuta underwent training under ZC’s high-performance program. Additionally, they were fined 50% of their salaries for three months starting January 2024.

Both players have since passed drug tests conducted after the conclusion of their suspension period.

Madhevere and Mavuta’s last appearances for Zimbabwe were during the home series against Ireland in December 2023. They also participated in one match each in the Logan Cup. Representing Mashonaland Eagles and Mid West Rhinos respectively, before their suspensions in January.

Givemore Makoni, the Managing Director of ZC, expressed his satisfaction with Madhevere and Mavuta’s rehabilitation, stating, “I am pleased to welcome Wessly and Brandon back to competitive cricket after both of them underwent rehabilitation and also passed a drug test carried out to check if they were now clean.” Makoni emphasized the players’ acknowledgment of their mistakes and their commitment to maintaining clean records while focusing on their cricket careers.

However, there has been no update on batter Kevin Kasuza. Who was also suspended in January after testing positive for a banned recreational drug.

Additionally, Davis Murwendo, a ZC academy player, has tested positive for social drug in the latest round of internal tests. He is scheduled to appear for a hearing soon.

ZC’s anti-drug program, although voluntary and separate from ICC and WADA obligations. Has been lauded for its proactive approach to addressing substance abuse among players. Makoni highlighted the importance of the initiative, which provides education, counseling, and treatment to rehabilitate players involved with social drugs.

Overall, ZC’s efforts reflect a commitment to player welfare and the promotion of clean and responsible sporting conduct within Zimbabwean cricket.
