Sanju Samson, Kerala’s star cricketer, has been excluded from the state squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to disciplinary reasons. Samson, who recently led Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, failed to attend the mandatory three-day Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) camp. Although named in the 30-member probables list, Sanju Samson missed the camp, prompting selectors to omit him when trimming the squad to 19 players after two practice matches.

With Samson unavailable, the selectors appointed Salman Nizar as captain, while an injury sidelined experienced batter Sachin Baby. KCA secretary Vinod S Kumar confirmed the development, revealing that Samson had informed the board via email about his unavailability for the camp. The KCA decided to include only players who participated in the camp, leaving no room for further discussions with the wicketkeeper-batter.
This decision could significantly impact Samson’s aspirations for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Moreover, a strong performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy would have bolstered his chances of making the squad. However, his absence may now complicate his selection prospects.
Samson recently showcased fine form at the international level, scoring three T20I centuries. However, missing a key domestic tournament like the Vijay Hazare Trophy might be a setback for the stylish batter.
Kerala’s squad for the tournament includes Salman Nizar (captain), Rohan S Kunnummal, Mohammed Azharuddeen, Anand Krishnan, Jalaj Saxena, Basil Thampi, and others. Despite missing two senior players, the team will still aim to make an impact. Furthermore, Samson’s exclusion underscores the KCA’s strict stance on discipline, emphasizing the importance of adhering to team protocols.
