Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan is reportedly in talks with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to assume the role of team mentor. If the deal goes through, Zaheer would step into the void left by the departures of Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel, two pivotal figures in the franchise. Gambhir joined Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023, and Morkel, who served as LSG’s bowling coach for three seasons, will now be part of the Indian national team setup.
Zaheer Khan’s name has come up not just for a mentorship role but also to guide LSG’s bowling department. With his extensive experience and strategic insights, Zaheer previously came under consideration for the role of bowling coach during Gambhir’s leadership of Team India. However, the BCCI ultimately chose Morne Morkel for the position, likely due to Gambhir’s recommendation.
If Zaheer joins LSG, he would work alongside head coach Justin Langer, forming part of an impressive coaching staff that includes Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes. With LSG narrowly missing the playoffs last season, Zaheer’s leadership could provide the team with the boost they need as they prepare for another highly competitive IPL campaign. His experience and cricketing acumen could be a valuable asset to both the franchise’s leadership and bowling unit.
