Electing to bat first after winning the toss, the West Indies posted a challenging total of 269 for 8 wickets in their 50 overs. The architect of this formidable score was none other than Hayley Matthews, who struck a magnificent unbeaten knock of 140 runs. Her innings, laced with 15 boundaries and a six, provided the perfect foundation for the West Indian total.
Matthews’ masterclass with the bat wasn’t the only story of the day, as she also displayed her all-around prowess by picking up three crucial wickets with the ball during Pakistan’s chase. This remarkable performance, a century and three wickets in a single ODI match, has placed her name in the record books.
Chasing a daunting target of 270, the Pakistan Women found the going tough. Their batting line-up faltered under pressure, eventually being dismissed for a meagre 156 runs in under 36 overs. While contributions from Muneeba Ali and Nida Dar offered some resistance, it wasn’t enough to prevent a Pakistan collapse. The West Indian bowling attack, spearheaded by Matthews, Afy Fletcher, and Zaida James, kept things tight, restricting the Pakistani batters and ensuring victory for the visitors.
This convincing win for the West Indies Women extends their remarkable winning streak in Pakistan to an impressive seven ODIs, dating back to 2004. As the series advances, the Windies hold the momentum firmly, with Karachi hosting the second and third ODIs on April 21 and April 23 respectively.
