Bangladesh ended Day 1 of the second Test against India in Kanpur at 107 for 3, with only 35 overs played due to bad light and rain. The day began with a one-hour delay for the toss, caused by a wet outfield from overnight rain. When the toss finally took place, India captain Rohit Sharma won and chose to bowl first, marking the first time since 2015 that India opted to field in a home Test.

Rohit anticipated that his seamers would benefit from the overcast conditions and a pitch that was softer and had more grass than usual for Kanpur. Conversely, Bangladesh, wanting to bat first, selected three spinners for the match.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled with movement but couldn’t take a wicket in his initial three maidens. Mohammed Siraj also struggled to find success as Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan held their ground. The match turned when Akash Deep entered in the ninth over and dismissed Zakir, who edged a catch to Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully.
Akash Deep struck again shortly after, successfully challenging an lbw decision against Shadman Islam after India reviewed the on-field call. While Shanto played positively with some streaky boundaries, Mominul started cautiously but gained confidence, hitting a couple of boundaries off Akash Deep and Siraj.
As the final over before lunch commenced, light drizzle began, delaying the second session. Once play resumed, R. Ashwin quickly dismissed Shanto lbw for 31, ending a 51-run partnership. Mominul and Mushfiqur Rahim faced a few close calls before the umpires called off play due to heavy rain just before 3 PM local time.
