Wankhede Stadium Sets Guinness World Record on 50th Anniversary

Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium has made history by entering the Guinness Book of World Records. Days after celebrating its 50th anniversary, the stadium achieved the record for the ‘Largest Cricket Ball Sentence,’ using 14,505 red and white leather balls to form the phrase “Fifty Years Of Wankhede Stadium.”

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) hosted a grand celebration to mark the milestone, featuring cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer. However, the festivities extended beyond the event, with this unique world record showcasing the venue’s rich legacy.

The announcement coincided with the anniversary of Wankhede’s first international match, the historic India vs. West Indies Test played from January 23-29, 1975. The MCA dedicated the achievement to the late Eknath Solkar, who scored a century in that match, and to other legendary Mumbai cricketers who contributed significantly to the sport.

In an inspiring gesture, the cricket balls used for the record will be donated to schools, clubs, and NGOs across Mumbai, aiming to encourage young talent. This initiative highlights Wankhede Stadium’s role not only as a historical venue but also as a symbol of cricketing passion for future generations.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma stirred excitement during the celebration, vowing to bring home the Champions Trophy in 2025. Addressing fans, he promised the team would give their all to secure another ICC trophy. The Wankhede Stadium, which hosted a celebration for India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024, continues to serve as a venue of unforgettable cricketing memories and aspirations.
