India’s Varun Chakravarthy has been on a record-breaking tour against South Africa, spinning his way into the history books. The right-arm leg spinner, known for his deceptive variations, achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming India’s top wicket-taker in a bilateral men’s T20I series. Chakravarthy, who took his maiden T20I five-wicket haul earlier in the series, reached this feat during the third T20I against Aiden Markram’s South Africa at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Despite conceding 23 runs initially, Chakravarthy regained control, delivering two crucial breakthroughs by dismissing Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks. His wicket of Markram carried special significance, making him the first Indian bowler to take 10 or more wickets in a bilateral T20I series. This achievement surpassed the previous record held by spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi, each with nine wickets.
Chakravarthy’s stellar performance places him in an elite group of spinners worldwide who have claimed 10 or more wickets in a bilateral T20I series. His current haul of 10 wickets from 16 overs, coupled with an economy rate of eight, sees him join renowned bowlers like New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, and New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner.
As the series nears its end, Chakravarthy’s steady performances have undoubtedly strengthened his place among the top T20I spinners, further boosting his reputation as a reliable player. Moreover, with one match left to play, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ star has a significant chance to extend his record and finish the series on an even better note. This would undoubtedly highlight his key role in India’s T20I team, reinforcing his importance in the squad moving forward.
