Rain Washes Out 1st T20I Between Pakistan and New Zealand: Shaheen Afridi Takes Wicket Despite Match Abandonment

The weather gods had the final say in the highly anticipated first T20I encounter between Pakistan and New Zealand, ultimately leading to the match being called off due to rain. Unpredictable weather conditions plagued the entire day, with intermittent showers causing delays right from the toss.

Rain Washes Out 1st T20I Between Pakistan and New Zealand: Shaheen Afridi Takes Wicket Despite Match Abandonment

Despite New Zealand winning the toss and electing to bat first, persistent rain repeatedly interrupted play, almost jeopardizing the entire Pakistan vs New Zealand Series. After a lengthy wait, there was a brief window of opportunity with the rain subsiding momentarily. This allowed the ground to dry marginally for a potential shortened T20 match of 5 overs per side.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan’s pace spearhead, made an immediate impact in this brief window. He dismissed debutant Tim Robinson with a sensational inswinger that shattered the middle stump.

Unfortunately, the weather played spoilsport once again, with rain resuming shortly after the short break. With no further chance of resuming play, the umpires had no choice but to abandon the match. Players from both sides shook hands and left the field. It’s important to note that according to PCB policy, spectators will not receive ticket refunds as the toss did take place.

This rain-affected encounter marked the debut of four players in the T20I format. Tim Robinson was one of the debutants for New Zealand, while Pakistan also awarded T20I caps to Usman Khan, Irfan Khan, and Abrar Ahmed.

The focus now shifts to the second T20I, scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi on Saturday. Cricket fans will be hoping for clear skies and a thrilling contest between the two strong teams.
