Australia’s Travis Head expressed pride in his all-round performance as the world champions secured a 3-2 one-day international series victory over England, winning the rain-affected finale by 49 runs in Bristol.
In the match, England looked set for a substantial total at 202-2 in the 25th over, thanks to Ben Duckett’s 107 and captain Harry Brook’s 72. However, a spin collapse saw England bowled out for 309, with Head claiming an impressive 4-28 from his off-spin bowling, marking his best performance in ODIs.
Head’s Contributions and Team Effort
“It’s always nice to get the job done for the team,” Head said after being named both the player of the match and the series. He added, “We’ve got a lot of options with the ball, and I’m more than happy to help when needed.” In his primary role as a left-handed opening batsman, Head also contributed 31 runs during a rapid first-wicket partnership of 78 with Matthew Short, who scored 58. Australia aimed to build a solid total before rain disrupted play.
Despite a rain delay, the umpires ensured England bowled the minimum required 20 overs, allowing the match to conclude under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. Australia was ahead at 165-2 when rain ended the contest.
Head finished the series with 248 runs at an average of nearly 83, including a remarkable 154 not out in the first match at Trent Bridge, and he took six wickets at an average of 10.33.
England’s Brook, leading in the absence of injured captain Jos Buttler, noted the positives despite the series loss. He stated, “We’ve got a hell of a lot of positives to take away from that.” As he prepares for a three-match Test series in Pakistan, he also looked forward to warmer conditions, saying, “I love playing cricket… I’m off to a hot country; it’s bloody freezing here.”
