Cricket Scotland is facing another legal battle following the sudden retirement of Hamza Tahir, a 28-year-old left-arm spinner, from international cricket. Tahir, who claimed 63 wickets in 48 matches for Scotland, cited systemic racism and discrimination as the main reasons behind his decision. He claimed that a fellow South Asian player had once told him, “you have to perform twice as well” to succeed in the Scotland setup. Tahir also mentioned that selectors omitted him from the recent T20 World Cup squad and alleged that a senior coach used racial slurs during a tour in 2020.

Tahir’s retirement and allegations emerge during a tumultuous period for Cricket Scotland. An independent review deemed the organization institutionally racist two years ago after former players Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh lodged complaints. The “Changing the Boundaries” report revealed 448 examples of racism and discrimination within the organization, yet only five have led to disciplinary actions. The entire board resigned in July 2022, just before the report’s publication.

Recently, another former player, John Blain, stated that he was exonerated of racist behavior allegations but accused Cricket Scotland of attempting to “rewrite history.” In response to Tahir’s retirement, Cricket Scotland expressed its sympathy for anyone who has faced discrimination and thanked Tahir for his service. CEO Trudy Lindblade emphasized the need for independent mediation to achieve reconciliation and create an inclusive sport.

Lindblade stated, “The only viable route to common ground is through independent mediation to achieve reconciliation. Ongoing instability and recrimination, played out in front of the media, will only cause further damage to relationships and reputations, and deepen the wounds that need to heal.”
