Star Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood recently hinted at the possibility of Australia strategically managing their margin of victory in the upcoming T20 World Cup match against Scotland to influence England’s chances of qualification. However, Hazlewood acknowledged the potential consequences, highlighting that such actions could result in disciplinary action against captain Mitchell Marsh.

England currently stands fourth in the standings after one loss and one abandoned game, with their final positions pending matches against Oman and Namibia. Hazlewood emphasized Australia’s desire to potentially eliminate England from the tournament, recognizing England as a formidable team in T20 cricket.
“In this tournament, you potentially come up against England at some stage again, they’re probably one of the top few teams on their day, and we’ve had some real struggles against them in T20 cricket, so if we can get them out of the tournament that’s in our best interest as well as probably everyone else,” Hazlewood commented in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
Hazlewood expressed uncertainty about whether Australia would engage in discussions regarding manipulating their match outcome, noting it would be decided by others rather than himself. He acknowledged this as a new situation for the team and highlighted the need for strategic play akin to their recent performances.
However, executing such a strategy could lead to repercussions for Mitchell Marsh under Article 2.11 of the ICC’s code of conduct, which prohibits actions aimed at altering the standings of teams in ICC events through deliberate losses or manipulating run rates. A violation could result in Marsh facing a ban for two of Australia’s upcoming three Super Eight fixtures.
The rule aims to prevent unfair manipulation and maintain the integrity of ICC events, with Hazlewood’s comments highlighting the complexities and risks involved in strategic decisions during competitive tournaments.
