While the Impact Player rule in the IPL has received mixed reviews from players and coaches, former India coach Ravi Shastri is backing it, highlighting its role in creating thrilling finishes.
In a conversation with R Ashwin on his Youtube channel, Shastri expressed his support for the rule, emphasizing the need to adapt to changing times. He pointed out how the rule has led to tighter finishes, contributing to the excitement of the IPL matches.
Despite some concerns raised by players like Rohit Sharma, who feels it may hinder the development of allrounders, Ashwin cited the example of Dhruv Jurel, who benefited from the rule by making his Test debut for India within a year after starting as an Impact Player in IPL 2023.
Shastri acknowledged that new rules often face resistance initially but emphasized that as people witness high-scoring games and players seizing opportunities, perceptions may change over time.
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, clarified that the Impact Player rule is not permanent and that stakeholders will evaluate its continuation after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
While the rule, introduced in 2023 after a trial in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, faced criticism from high-profile figures like Rohit Sharma, other players such as Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar also voiced reservations.
Despite the mixed opinions, DC head coach Ricky Ponting suggested he would support the rule if it enhances the spectacle of the IPL, although he personally found it challenging to manage as a coach.
