After a relatively successful tour of South Africa, Team India is gearing up to commence their home season with a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The opening clash, scheduled for January 11 in Mohali, marks India’s sole T20I assignment before the upcoming World Cup in June.

India’s recent T20I performances have been a mix of inconsistency, with a drawn series in South Africa and a surprising defeat in the West Indies alongside victories against Australia and Ireland.

On the other hand, Afghanistan enters the series following an impressive run in the Asian Games, a standout performance in the ODI World Cup, and a recent T20I series win against the UAE.

Although Afghanistan has never secured a T20I victory against India, they have a track record of upsetting top-ranked teams in the format, highlighted by their 2-1 series win against Pakistan last year.

As India heads into the opening T20I as favorites, they must be mindful of Afghanistan’s formidable spin attack, adapt their bowling strategy to counter Afghanistan’s power hitters, and prioritize dismissing the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz early in the innings.

Confronting Afghanistan’s Spin Threat:

Afghanistan’s world-class spinners, including Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, and Qais Ahmad, pose a formidable threat, even in the absence of Rashid Khan. India’s batters must prepare for a spin onslaught, and overcoming this quartet becomes crucial for India’s success, particularly in the absence of key players like Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya.

Utilizing Spin Advantage at Mohali:

“Considering the vast boundaries at Mohali, India should strategically adopt a spin-heavy approach, possibly incorporating three spinners in the playing XI. In particular, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi’s wrist spin could prove highly effective against Afghanistan’s power hitters, making it challenging for them to clear the boundaries. Consequently, capitalizing on the larger dimensions of the ground will be key to stifling Afghanistan’s middle and lower order.”

Early Dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Afghanistan’s explosive wicket-keeper batter, has consistently been a run-scorer and a key player in their victories. In light of this, India’s strategy should revolve around dismissing Gurbaz early, thereby disrupting Afghanistan’s momentum and restricting their powerful middle order. Notably, India’s recent success in T20Is against Afghanistan has involved effectively containing Gurbaz. Therefore, replicating this approach will be vital as India prepares for the T20I series opener. These strategic moves are expected to play a crucial role in countering Afghanistan’s strengths and securing a positive start to their home season.
