Marcus Stoinis will captain the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. The 35-year-old allrounder takes over from Glenn Maxwell, who resigned as captain after the previous summer.
Stoinis previously captained the Stars in Maxwell’s absence last season and was considered for the interim captaincy during Maxwell’s 2022-23 absence due to a broken leg. However, the team chose Adam Zampa for that role.

A key figure in the Stars’ lineup, Stoinis is only the second player after Maxwell to reach 100 BBL appearances for the club. He extended his contract until the 2026-27 season last year, cementing his future at the Stars.
Stoinis expressed his pride in taking on the leadership role, saying, “I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi’s absence last year and loved the opportunity. “I am honoured to be given the role full-time.” He also expressed confidence in the team’s potential for success, both on and off the field.
Stars General Manager Blair Crouch praised Maxwell’s leadership over the past five seasons and highlighted Stoinis’ leadership qualities. “Marcus demonstrated his leadership ability last year and has been a senior member of the side for a long time,” Crouch said.
Stoinis will lead a weakened squad early in the season, with Maxwell, Scott Boland, and Beau Webster unavailable due to injury or national commitments. Additionally, overseas players Ben Duckett and Osama Mir will miss the first three games. Meanwhile, Melbourne Renegades have signed Marcus Harris and Xavier Crone, and Brisbane Heat secured Jack Wildermuth.
