Australian cricket star Steven Smith remains positive about his new role as a Test opener, emphasizing his eagerness to face the new ball. Despite potential risks, Smith is focused on the challenge and aims to contribute positively to the team’s performance.”

Australia’s batting maestro, Steven Smith, expressed his enthusiasm for his recent shift to the opening position in Test cricket. As he prepared to face the West Indies in the upcoming series, Smith highlighted his eagerness to tackle the new ball, a role he actively pursued.

The idea of Smith taking on the role of opener had been in discussion since last year’s Ashes, gaining serious consideration during the recent Test against Pakistan at the SCG. While initially undecided, selectors embraced the concept, acknowledging the historical success of players transitioning to the top of the order.

Reflecting on his decision to move up the batting order, Smith revealed, “I’d be keen to get up top and face the new ball.” Initially not taken seriously, his proposal gained attention only after he reiterated his genuine interest in the role.

Acknowledging the potential risks and uncertainties surrounding his new position, Smith remained optimistic. When asked about the possibility of returning to his previous batting position if the experiment does not succeed, he stated, “I don’t like thinking that way. I don’t want to think negative thoughts at all.”

Smith sees significant advantages in the move, emphasizing his effectiveness against the new ball. With an impressive average of 106.2 when facing the first two overs, he anticipates a more attacking approach and increased scoring opportunities.

Addressing the potential change in the tactics employed by opposing teams, Smith noted, “It would be pretty game if you’ve got a brand new ball bowling short stuff and wasting it.” He believes the new role could provide him with more scoring opportunities and a chance to be more proactive.

Motivated by the desire for a new challenge and the opportunity to contribute differently to the team, Smith views the opening position as a chance to invigorate his career.

As Smith prepares for his role as an opener, he remains focused on the positives, emphasizing the excitement and fresh challenges that come with the change.
